The artisans of Le Marche
If you want to visit the home of Italy’s artisan shoe industry, you’ll need to head around 250km north east of Rome. Here you’ll arrive at the stunning Marche region, which sits between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea on Italy’s east coast.
Le Marche is a hive of specialised manufacturing. And shoemaking in the area is still very much an artisan industry.
The vast majority of these businesses are family-owned and on average
each one employs just a handful of people.
Since the first 124 Shoes store opened in Melbourne seven years ago, our owners Anthony and Neville have regularly travelled to Le Marche to handpick our collections from some of the regions finest makers including Lemargo, Preventi, Shoto and Pantanetti.
They spend weeks visiting small operations and seeing highly skilled makers continue to use techniques and unique skills that have been passed down from generation to generation.
